Hello fellow gardeners! Welcome to a new year!
It is a start of a new century for all Ontario horticulturists.
Last year was an exciting year for us. A celebration of the Ontario Horticultural Society’s ‘One Hundred Years’ of gardening was held in Ottawa in August. This was a huge convention with gardeners from all over Ontario in attendance.
Newcastle also had its own celebration this summer. It was our village’s Sesquicentennial (150 years). Newcastle Horticultural Society beautification Committee planted around the Town Hall and Parkette, flower displays were created by members for inside the hall and in the tents for the many events that were held. We also had a display booth which many of you visited and I hope you waved to us in the parade. These two events brought much planning, planting and working together with great fun for all of us as a village and as a society.
In April our very own Ann Best became the Director-Elect of District 17 at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). A delegation from our society was there to cheer her on. We also won first prize in the Team Challenge for a “Roof Top Garden”. There were also many entries from our members who received a variety of prizes. All in all it was a super day for our society.
We have grown and will continue to grow into our second century. Plans are made for our regular meetings but there are a few surprises too!
A St. Patrick’s Day tea, a planned bus trip are just two new events.
We have a wonderful executive eager to promote gardening in many forms. A starter group of young gardeners learning to dig, plant and help save our environment. There is a school project and of course our plant sale.
To all our members, old ones, new ones and “I will be one”. Come join us for helpful hints, fun, refreshments, door prizes and much enjoyment.
See you soon!
Your President
