Who We Are: We welcome everyone who loves to grow things, loves gardens and gardening, and wants to protect our natural environment. The Newcastle Gardening Club is made up of volunteers from beginners to experts. At meetings we exchange news, show what we've grown, and learn from professional speakers. We're dedicated to beautifying our Newcastle community.
History:Originally (and still officially) the Newcastle Horticultural Society, our club was formed in 1914 as a member of the Ontario Horticultural Association (Garden Ontario). The first president was Dr. J. Butler.
Emblem: The Smooth Wild Rose (Rosa blanda) was introduced as the club's emblem in 1921. The original was hand drawn and its appearance has been preserved to this day. Rosa blanda is common throughout southern Ontario. The plants are almost thornless, with prickles only at the base. Pink flowers, about 7 cm across, appear in late May and June.
