What We Do: We're building a diverse community of volunteers with a variety of interests—home gardening, vegetable farming, containers/pots, houseplants, therapy gardens and protecting our natural environment. We like getting together with other green (and not-so-green) thumbs. Everyone is welcome—you don't have to get your hands dirty! Come to learn, laugh and volunteer to make a difference.
History:Originally called the Newcastle Horticultural Society, our group began in 1914 as a member of the Ontario Horticultural Association (now Garden Ontario). The first president was Dr. J. Butler, whose property on King Avenue—near the current library and church—hosted garden parties and flower shows.
Emblem: The Smooth Wild Rose (Rosa blanda) is our emblem. The original logo was updated in 2024 when we adopted the name Newcastle Gardening Club. Rosa blanda is common throughout southern Ontario. Almost thornless, it has open pink flowers, and blooms in late May and June.
